Week 5: Nanotech + Art

Nanotechnology is always related to inventions in the labs, but it is actually closely related to our daily lives. In a recent TV show I saw, a stain-proof clothes is used to allow guests to play in the mud without staining the clothes. It’s a great example of how nanotechnology is used to change our lives. Those hydrophobic clothes are made with “polyester fabric layered with billions of silica particles, preventing most liquid molecules from attaching to it”. Such kind of technology is already used in products available to customers.

Those days, the groundbreaking 3D printing has become extremely popular. It is widely used in the field of both art and science. At the same time, nanotechnology scientist is working on expanding 3D printing into nanoscale. “A promising 3D nanoscale printing method involves spinning nanofibres out of a liquid under a strong electrical field.” Researchers in Seoul National University made breakthrough. They have used 3D printing to stack nanometer-scale polymer threads into a tiny wall. They are also planning to make nanoscale robots that could be use in medication.

Besides changing our daily life, nanotech is also bringing good news to artists and art lovers. Nowadays, nanotechnology is used to restore aging painting in an extremely gentle way. Scientists place thin layers of nanoscale chemicals onto artworks to restore the structure of the chemicals on the artworks. Also, gels are used to clean artworks that are too fragile to be cleaned in a traditional way.
